Huahine
(pronounced"Hoo-ah-hee-nay")

We spent one great day on Huahine, and we wished it was longer!  Huahine is wild, exotic and the most undeveloped of the Society Islands. Our launch dropped us off at a small pier in the village of Maroe.  From there we took a Le Truck to the small town of Fare about a 10 minute drive through the hills around the island Nui.

We rented bicycles in Fare and spent the next four to five hours bicycling around the northern part of Huahine Nui.

During the ride, we made several stops and took pictures at an ancient Marae near the town of Maeva, a small vanilla farm where we bought some home grown vanilla, and at the entrance to the road to the Hotel Sofitel, where there were ancient fish traps in the water that still work today! Then we ventured on to see the famous and sacred "blue-eyed eels". We got there and couldn't find where the eels were at first, but then a tour bus had just pulled in behind us and so we lucked out!  The eels are just under a small stone bridge in a freshwater creek.  A man from the tour jumped into the creek and started feeding the eels.

We were hot and tired, so we decided to bike back since we had to be back at the pier for the launch no later than 4:00pm.
We stopped for a quick lunch and a dip at the Sofitel Hotel pool bar.  Then back to the bikes to the pier to catch our launch.
What a great day!  Huahine.....Huahine....
